Bounce Back from depression
I think there was a line in Kung Fu Panda where Shifu says, "yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift. That is why it is called present."
When you hit rock bottom, your mind is stuck in the past. You effectively killed the present moments so your awareness becomes fixated on the failed past. You have no idea about the present anymore.
Your future is no longer a mystery because you've decided in your mind that the failures are a summation of your future potential. You relive the history over and over again like a broken record player.
Life around you looks like pieces of shattered mirrors. Everything seems distorted. Relationships that were once trusted are nonexistent because you don't trust yourself anymore. Trying to get your mind to think straight is nearly impossible. People you know seem to be moving ahead without you.
Ultimately, you associate failure to your identity. Not a good place to be. I've been there.
Here's how I changed things around.
First, I slept for hours, days on in. I needed uninterrupted 100% rest in spirit, mind, emotions, and body to recharge my sense of drive.
I had to redefine who I was in order to become who I wanted to be. My personality needed a major over haul. So I got back to my roots:
I became a sort of hermit in self-reflection and action. I kept a personal journal. I wrote out plans. I researched. I acquired new knowledge.
I treated myself as though I was building a new inner-relationship.
I became kinder to me but also more demanding. I forgave but also renewed my confidence. I stopped thinking about the past but acquired the lessons. I laid to rest all the reasons and excuses for what happened but stepped above'em as a foundation.
Second, I focused my will-power and attention into growth from where I was to where I wanted to be so naturally my first priority was to become financially successful without having to "F*&^" anyone over so to speak like Matt Damon shared during his Graham Norton interview.
Instead of trying to take giant steps forward, I took time to establish my mental and emotional foundations first. In a sense, I re-established my guiding principles.
I maintained my focus on what I needed to do no matter what. I stopped caring about what others would think of me; especially my family.
Things were extremely harsh to say the least. I could have given up so many times but the little voice in my head reminded me, "don't stop. keep going. it will get better." My internal response was always, "when?" So i kept going to find the answer.
My main focus was on the basic necessities: shelter and food. Instead of relaxing once I secured those items, my next steps forward were immediately in place.
Then I started to embrace the present moments. I viewed the past as a distant memory by acquiring the wisdom. Things really started to pick up pace when I applied the wisdom in real-time. Slowly, the present moments started to feel like gifts again and the future felt mysteriously exciting.
Third, my personality became consistent and persistent with thoughts and actions. I made sure my thoughts were positive. Anytime a negative thought crossed my mind, I would say, "cancel" and immediately replace it with a positive thought.
I kept the momentum going by applying focus in the areas that looked promising on all levels of spirit, mental, emotional, and physical. For the spirit, I invested about an hour a day in self-reflection and meditation. For the mind, I acquired new knowledge. For the emotional, I made sure my nutrition was balanced and kept things in check by thinking things through to avoid impulse reactions. For the body, I exercised with high intensity.
If you step back for a moment and analyze, this part of the experience was sort of like taking an entrepreneurial idea through a start-up process but in this case it was taking a "bad idea" and transforming into a "good idea" using internal and external resources. Just like a start-up business from a conceptual idea into a viable idea for market.
Most importantly, in order to move forward, stop carrying other people's burden around; and specifically, let go of your past.
Think onward. Build trust into meaningful relationships.
Do not let others define who you are. You are solely responsible for your own well-being.
